In a sneak peak into the results of this year’s Sanlam Benchmark survey, Sanlam confirmed that in 2022, research found just 31% of respondents said they’d access funds from their Two-pot savings component; in 2024, this jumped to 59%. (Sanlam releases the results of the full survey on 11 July.)
Editor’s Thoughts.
Recently a friend of mine celebrated his son’s 16th birthday. The usual dilemma of what gift would appropriately mark such an auspicious day came up in conversation. Open a share trading account, was my first response. This was immediately met with looks of confusion around the (online) meeting table.
My favourite pick of today (Top Picks) is Mariska Oosthuizen’s article sharing practical tips on how to discuss the F(inance) word with your kids. Right now the industry is abuzz with discussions on poor financial literacy levels and how to best go about educating members and clients on the impacts of withdrawing from their savings pots in less than 60 days’ time. As parents, we really need to be having budgeting, financial planning and investment conversations with our kids. Working with money is a key life skill that children and young adults need to become comfortable with in the safe environment of home before that first pay cheque lands in their bank accounts.
