SURF’s Board of Trustees is comprised of two sponsor-appointed trustees and two independent trustees, one of whom serves as the independent chairman. While the two sponsor trustees carry the designation of “sponsor appointed”, they are not employed by the sponsor nor paid as an employee of the sponsor. The alternate trustees are employed by the sponsor

SURF’s default investment strategy, which is set by its board of trustees, is a range of life-stage model portfolios, which means that members will be invested in a high-risk portfolio until they are within six years of the retirement fund’s normal retirement age. Thereafter, SURF will automatically transfer members’ retirement savings to more conservative and lower risk portfolios in the six years prior to retirement.
