The fund has four trustees, who have several years of industry experience, with each trustee bringing their own area of expertise to the board. There are two independent trustees and two sponsor appointed trustees.

In the default investment strategy, the employer or management committee to choose either the SmartActive or SmartPassive Life stage model as the preferred investment strategy. The default Life Stage caters to the needs of most members of the NMG
Umbrella SmartFund. The Life Stage automatically starts moving the member’s fund credit from the aggressive to conservative portfolio as the member reaches seven years from normal retirement age. Members can confidently invest in the Life Stage model as they transition from one phase of their lives to the next.

Members can choose to invest in a wide range of investment portfolios offered by the trustees if they do not want to be invested in the Life Stage strategy.

The fund does not restrict the insurer that the employer or management committee decides
to use after considering due diligence, solvency, and the terms and conditions being offered, providing the insurer is properly registered.
