Following National Savings Month, which we observed in July 2026, this edition of the Economies at a glance publication focuses on the growing global competition for savings as economies seek to finance artificial intelligence, the energy transition, defence and critical infrastructure. We highlight what attracts foreign capital, where this capital flows and how strong domestic savings pools can reduce exposure to capital flight and external financing shocks.

 

Closer to home, we unpack South Africa’s savings and investment conundrum. We look at the contributions of corporates, households and government to national savings and consider how low savings, weak investor confidence and a limited pipeline of bankable projects continue to constrain investment and economic growth.
