It was Oprah Winfrey who said, “women of South Africa are some of the most powerful people on Earth. Change what you believe is possible for yourself.” With this in mind, we acknowledge another Women’s Month – where we celebrate the strong and dynamic women who make up this country. Women making strides in their respective spaces and levelling the playing field in the business world.
Level Finance CEO and co-founder Raeesa Gabriels believes it’s important for women in business to create an ecosystem for themselves when so much is stacked up against them as they navigate their way in the world.
“One of the biggest hurdles to women in business is access to funding, investment and access to the market. A 2020 study showed that only 2.3% of funding was allocated to women-led start-ups.”
But what can we do about this? Gabriels says women need to align and surround themselves with like-minded individuals who can add value to them and vice versa.
“We have to work together, collaborate, and to support each other. I was fortunate to have people in my life who believed in me and saw potential – it’s important to do the same for others if given the opportunity.”
This month Gabriels will be speaking at a women’s Month event for Womvest on 25 August – an initiative that provides a network of women professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors to share insights and create value for one another through collaborations, connections, and mentorships. The Johannesburg-based organisation is a true reflection of women supporting women and seeks to encourage the next generation of women to invest in themselves and in one another.
